|Mrs. Mills' Class||
Dear Parents, Nov. 20, 2017
Where did the month go? It is already Thanksgiving break!! Even though we have a few kiddos absent this week, we are still hard at it. Today we continued to practice regrouping, even going into the hundreds place on a few problems. We will practice regrouping with addition the week following the holiday as well. The students are also reviewing and practicing time to the quarter hour. We will work on this throughout the nine week.s. In reading this week we will wrap up our MTH Thanksgiving on Thursday book. Last week, the students compared their life to a pilgrim child using a cool app., Tools 4 Students. Today we used it again to sequence the important events from Ch. 8. Please bring all MTH books back to school after the holiday break.. In Science we created and flew twirly birds (Check out the instagram video!) and the class has learned all about things that rotate. They shared their knowledge with the app. Picolage and their own spinners from home. In Social Studies we will dive into explorers and Native American tribes when we return.
We all have so many blessing to be thankful for! One of my many blessings is the fabulous students I get to teach everyday! I hope you all have a wonderful and relaxing Thanksgiving!
COMING SOON IN DECEMBER...
Hello All, Nov. 13, 2017
Happy Monday! Thank you all for the sweet birthday wishes! We had a great day on Friday celebrating, and then I had a fun day yesterday with family. Even the Longhorns gave me a win for my birthday!
This week we are continuing to MENTALLY add 2-digit numbers. We will start off adding without regrouping (carrying). We will be working on breaking down the number into tens and ones, and then mentally adding those to get the total sum. By the end of the week, we will introduce the concept of regrouping (carrying). This will take more time for some students to master. Please remember we are still working on fluency and automaticity with our facts. Make sure to practice math facts at home! We will also be practicing telling time to 15 minutes increments. As I mentioned in conferences, this is a skill that will build on each other until the end the of the year with telling time to the minute. Any practice at home is appreciated.
In reading we will start a new, whole-class book, The Magic Tree House: Thanksgiving on Thursday. Your child will come home with the book and/or a comprehension assignment each night. Please take a few minutes to read with your student and help with the questions if necessary. Each student picked an individual reading goal that he/she wants to work on over the next few weeks. Take a minute to chat with your student about what he/she wants to improve on. We will also begin to read some fun fiction books on "TURKEYS" to help prepare for Thanksgiving!! This week we will add more letter writing elements to our LA notebook (date, greeting, body, closing, signature) and continue with abbreviations. . In writing, we are finishing up our "Something Beautiful" and will ship it out to be published this week! Im so excited to see how our REAL BOOK turns out!!
In science we are continuing with balance and motion. This week we will explore tops an twirlers. The students always love this unit!
Please keep me posted on Thanksgiving travels, and let the office know if your student will be out. Thanks!
Dear Parents, Nov. 6, 2017
Happy November! I was so impressed to come back and get a wonderful report from the substitute. Im so proud of our kiddos! They are becoming more independent and responsible by the second! Weather should change this week. Make sure that jackets are labeled.
This week we will wrap up reviewing subtraction strategies in math. This week we will start to look at key words in word problems to decide which operation to use and then still have to solve the problem. We will also be looking at time to the quarter hour. We will practice time to the quarter hour this entire nine weeks. As I mentioned in conferences, this is a skill that will build on each other until the end the of the year with telling time to the minute. Any practice at home is appreciated to reinforce this skill. We are working on fluency and automaticity daily during math.. Any extra practice at home will reinforce that math skill.
In LA we will start our sloppy copies of our "beautiful somethings" to go along with the book we will read on Thursday. This writing will then be sent off to be published into a real book!! In the next couple weeks our reading homework will be a little different. We are starting a new chapter book whole class on Monday; Magic Tree House: Thanksgiving on Thursday. Your child will come home with the book and a comprehension assignment. Please take a few minutes to read with your student and help with the questions if necessary. As we are growing we are working on: reading with expression, building stamina and reading for comprehension. We will finish reading about and exploring spiders this week. We are reading both fiction and nonfiction texts and analyzing the different elements of both. Also this week we will add abbreviations to our LA notebooks. In writing, we are continuing to write in our journals, practice great writing and editing.
In science we will continue with our unit on balance and motion. This week the students really enjoyed creating their mobiles. I hung them up today and they love to see them twirling in the air. We also will make a popplet describing our mobiles and showing what we know about balance.
Please send headphones to school with your student ASAP. We are using iPads to listen to reading as well as learn with apps. and videos, and it would be helpful to be able to hear. Earbuds or headphones are fine; whatever works for your student. Thanks!
